Winchester Cathedral is the final resting place of Jane Austen. She’s one of my favourite writers, not just because of her witty social romances but also because she is a daughter of Hampshire like me.
The quality of these photos isn’t as good as I would’ve liked because a) my camera was playing up and b) people kept standing on the grave slab when I was trying to take photos (rude).
The interesting thing about Jane’s gravestone is that it doesn’t mention explicitly her success as a writer, just the ‘extraordinary endowments of her mind.’ Apparently, it wasn’t considered seemly for a woman of her position to make a living as an author.
There’s a brass plaque on the wall nearby that does mention her writing. Although as you can see it’s difficult to get a picture of this without a reflection. Really you need to see this yourself to get the best view of it. Which is what I recommend anyway.
