Jane Austen’s Grave, Winchester, UK

Winchester Cathedral is the final resting place of Jane Austen. She’s one of my favourite writers, not just because of her witty social romances but also because she is a daughter of Hampshire like me.

The interesting thing about Jane’s gravestone is that it doesn’t mention explicitly her success as a writer, just the ‘extraordinary endowments of her mind.’ Apparently, it wasn’t considered seemly for a woman of her position to make a living as an author.

There’s a brass plaque on the wall nearby that does mention her writing. Although as you can see it’s difficult to get a picture of this without a reflection. Really you need to see this yourself to get the best view of it. Which is what I recommend anyway.
