Can Writing Make you Feel Better?

Everyone has good days and bad days. Some people’s bad days are worse than others. And sometimes those bad “days” last weeks, months or even years. If you’re feeling low, it can be a struggle to do anything, least of all something creative. But sometimes writing can help make the dark a bit more bearable.

Writing how you feel can be helpful – but not always

It can be very cathartic to write down your feelings, your anger, your sadness etc either bare-faced or in an abstract way. But be careful how much you do this. Sometimes continuously writing these emotions and “living” in them can have a negative effect.

Despair does NOT equal high art

There’s a persistent myth that contentment is the enemy of creativity. Whilst turmoil, internal or external can provoke a release of creative energy creating work like Van Gogh ‘Sunflowers’, you don’t need to be distressed to create your masterpiece. So don’t expect you will. And don’t leave yourself in mental stress to try and become a true “artist”.

Just try it

We don’t always feel like writing at the best of times, but we make ourselves because we know we’ll probably be fine once we start. When you’re really not feeling like it, your best bet is to just give it a try. You don’t have to carry on with a work in progress, and there’s no pressure to be perfect. And if it’s not helping, just stop.

Writing for peace of mind

You can’t dictate when you’ll feel down and you sure as hell can’t find a magic cure for it. My personal experience is that writing of any kind, be it a blog post like this, or my WIP, usually makes me feel better. It’s not guaranteed of course, but I try to write a little bit every day nevertheless.

  1. I agree with you and appreciate your observations and encouragements.
    I’m not certain everyone feels creative, but think that each person needs some creative outlet; also physical, emotional, social, spiritual, educational, and natural. Perhaps one person needs more of an area than another, or gets more from that. Regardless, I think everyone needs some of each.

    1. Thanks for commenting. I agree not everyone feels creative which is a shame. I think that’s because people associate creativity with painting, writing etc and the idea you need to be ‘good’ at it or why bother. But you can be creative in pretty much any area of life. It’s just a case of finding what works and not worrying about how ‘good’ you are.

  2. This is so interesting. I think it’s in Prozac Nation where Elizabeth Wurtzel talks about how much more writers/composers/artists may have achieved in their careers had they not been depressed. We so often romanticise the idea of despair in the creative arts but, as you say, there is no need to live a life in mental stress to create good art. In fact, the more we can look after ourselves, the greater the chance I think that we can produce our best work.
