Over the years, I’ve ended up with a few things that I absolutely need to have in place to be able to write in an optimal fashion. You’ve probably (knowingly or not) got some yourself! Or if you’re struggling with how to set yourself up for the best writing sesh, some of these may inspire you!
1. No music (but no silence either)
I’m not good at writing with music on. I can just about do it with some kind of drone-y repetitive stuff, but anything with a semblance of melody is out of the question. Don’t even get me started on stuff with lyrics. I can and will, zone out with the merest hint of wordage. But I’m not keen on silence either so I usually my go for some kind of office or library based soundscape; pages turning, keyboards clicking, the odd squeaky floor or murmured voice (no phones though). Something that’s enough to cover any random outside noises and help me keep in my writing headspace.
2. A hot beverage
Ok so if it’s warm outside, I may have a cold drink instead. But there’s something that feels right about having a hot beverage of choice parked next to me when I’m writing. Even if I sometimes forget about it and then have to chug it lukewarm. I’m a Brit so naturally tea is my primary choice (Earl Grey, like our fine Captain Picard), but I will take a coffee from time to time to switch things up.
3. Favourite hoody
Again if it’s warm then no I won’t be wrapped up. But usually when one’s been sitting still for a while writing one gets a bit chilly. So having a cosy hoody on helps. I also find that putting my hood up helps me to focus (like blinkers on a horse I suppose) and gives me a sense of comfort and protection as a explore my imagined worlds.
4. Things to fiddle with
What I mean by this are bits and bobs on my desk to futz about with when I’m thinking. Because writing involves an awful lot of thinking not just bashing out words. I find having something I can do with my hands is very useful as I cogitate.
5. A little treat
Sometimes the motivation is… lacking. I’d like to say every bit of writing is fun and exciting and smooth – but it’s not. Sometimes you need a wee bit of help to get the words down (because you can’t refine your writing without, y’know writing). So having a little treat of some kind ready and waiting, can help motivate you to finish.

And this isn’t reading material – it’s a mug warmer that’s shaped like a cat – but if you’re like me in forgetting to drink your hot beverages, it may come in handy!
