If you’re of a certain age or any kind of film fan, then you’ll doubtless recognise the photos in this post. Known as Sycamore Gap – or Robin Hood Gap – this part of Hadrian’s Wall is famous for featuring in the 90s classic “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”.

Star of a classic 90s movie

If you haven’t seen it (where have you been?) this adaptation of the timeless tale is known for three things. These are – Kevin Costner’s not-at-all British accent, Alan Rickman’s over-the-top Sheriff of Nottingham, and Bryan Adam’s song “Everything I do, I do it for you”.

Sycamore gap featured in the scene where Robin, coming home from the Crusades with Azeem, encounters a small boy being chased by Guy of Gisbourne. When the boy is accused of poaching, Robin steps in to defend him and fighting ensues.

The gap is now one of the most photographed places on Hadrian’s Wall, and there’s even a small, new sycamore ready to take over when needed. Plus Roman mile castle 39 is right next door.

It’s a great place to visit, especially if you’re walking the wall anyway. And it’s worth noting that a detective novel by LJ Ross named “Sycamore Gap” is based at this very spot. So never underestimate where inspiration may be find you.

What do you think of this place? Have you ever visited? Please share in the comments.
