Collaboration is a buzzword of the modern era. These days you don’t have to be in the same room or even the same time zone to do it. Internet-based tools mean people can collaborate no matter where they are. But could it be the next big thing for the usually solitary pursuit of writing?

Writing a book? There’s an app for that

Writing collaboratively isn’t exactly new. A number of books have been written by two authors, and screenwriters often work as part of a group. But now websites and apps like “Inkvite” mean you can even write with complete strangers. And there are obvious benefits. If you’re hitting the writer’s block hard, you have someone (or even several someones) on hand to help take the strain.

The case for working alone

But whilst sharing ideas can produce amazing work, it may not always be the best way to do things. After all, writing is nominally a solitary business and people who like writing tend to like being solitary so it’s a natural fit for them. I’m can and have, worked collaboratively at work and on some writing. As humans, our ability to work together has allowed us to create great things. But equally some of our achievements have come from a single mind working by themselves until the time is right.

What do you think? Have you used Inkvite or collaborated with anyone on your writing? Let me know in the comments.
